Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the world's largest connectivity and mobile technology show, held every year in Barcelona at Fira Gran Via in late February or early March. For companies exhibiting or attending, side events — client dinners, cocktails, parties and VIP gatherings — are often as important as the stand itself. This guide explains how to plan them so they work during Barcelona's busiest week of the year.
What MWC is and why it matters for your event
MWC Barcelona, organised by the GSMA, brings together operators, manufacturers, startups and tech executives from around the world every year. Recent editions have drawn more than 100,000 visitors, making Barcelona the global centre of the industry for four days.
For a company, this is a unique opportunity to gather clients, partners and international press in one city. But it also means competing for their attention with hundreds of private events every night.
When to start planning
We recommend starting 6 to 12 months ahead. The city's most sought-after venues — museums, modernist buildings, rooftops and unique spaces near the Fira — are booked early, as are catering, AV, transport and staff.
If the decision comes late, there is still room: we know less obvious venues that work very well and can propose formats that fit real availability.
What kind of event works best during MWC
The most effective formats are private dinners for key clients, networking cocktails with partners, brand parties and VIP gatherings in exclusive venues. Events at the company's own Barcelona office also work very well: we transform them completely, as we did for Letgo's party during MWC.
The key is the experience: great food, a concept connected to the brand, music and moments to talk without noise. Guests have had a long day; a comfortable, well-designed event is remembered more than a crowded one.
Where to hold your event: areas and venues
Fira Gran Via is in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, next to Gran Via. Venues on Montjuïc and around Plaça d'Espanya are just minutes away; the city centre, Eixample and waterfront offer more variety in exchange for a slightly longer transfer.
Depending on the goal, we suggest museums such as MNAC for high-prestige dinners, historic buildings such as Llotja de Mar, secret venues such as Esklandestino next to the Fira, iconic seafront hotels or characterful former factories in the centre.
Logistics: transfers, timing and access
Organise shuttles from Fira Gran Via or from the group's hotels: traffic and taxi demand during MWC week are very high. Metro line 9 and FGC connect the venue with the city, but for groups an organised transfer is the most comfortable option.
Send the invitation early, ask for confirmation and send a same-day reminder with practical information: address, time, how to get there and dress code.
Common mistakes to avoid
Booking late and settling for a venue that doesn't fit. Scheduling the event too early, while guests are still at the show. Choosing a distant venue without transport. And above all, organising a generic event that blends in with all the others.
A good MWC event has a clear concept, a carefully chosen guest list, solved logistics and a reason to stay.
